Gas Lighting was the primary source of lighting before the light bulb and electric lighting began to become more popular. Although gas was a decent source of lighting, it could also be dangerous. Gas is very flammable and thats how the light would burn, although if there was a gas leak and a flame, a whole house could explode and burn. The gas was also poisonous. If there was a problem, it would probably kill you before you could fix it.
People did not just switch to electric lighting because gas was dangerous, but electricity was a better option. One of Edison's inventions, the "Long Waisted Marry Ann", a generator, could measure and control the amount of electricity that was used, making it more easy to fairly charge the consumer the correct amount. When Edison was figuring out how to price it, he considered how much people were all ready paying for gas, and he tried to keep his similarly priced, so that his lighting would be a consideration. One of Edison's goals was to create the light bulb to be safer than the other sources of light, and with wire insulation and other precautions he accomplished that goal.
